TRINITYWOMEN NEWS YOU CAN USE: May 2016

A 19th century poem entitled, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World” describes the powerful effect that women have on society. Many women - like Alberta Williams King, the mother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - are largely unknown by the wider world but make their mark by lovingly influencing their children to embrace Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Later, as adults, these individuals have a godly impact on whichever field of endeavor they enter. Other women, like Viola Liuzzo, a young housewife and mother of five children who was murdered for her civil-rights advocacy, rock the cradle and make their presence felt outside of the home by personally becoming involved in some worthy cause, thereby declaring that a Christ-centered worldview is relevant to every area of life. Some women, like Mahalia Jackson, never rear their own children but are called by God to share the love of Jesus with those in their sphere of influence, be they young, middle-aged or old.

Whatever state you find yourself in this month of May during which we celebrate Mother’s Day - whether you’re famous or, like most of us, you’re simply quietly living your life, whether you’ve physically mothered children or not - recommit yourself to leave a legacy of having impacted your world for Christ. Then, in the dying words of Sojourner Truth, you will have challenged those whom you influenced to heed this admonition: “Be a follower of the Lord Jesus.” Absolutely nothing else that you accomplish has greater eternal significance.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World

BLESSINGS on the hand of women!/Angels guard its strength and grace/In the palace, cottage, hovel/Oh, no matter where the place/Would that never storms assailed it/Rainbows ever gently curled/For the hand that rocks the cradle/Is the hand that rules the world.

Infancy's the tender fountain/Power may with beauty flow/Mothers first to guide the streamlets/ From them souls unresting grow/Grow on for the good or evil/ Sunshine streamed or evil hurled/For the hand that rocks the cradle/Is the hand that rules the world.

Woman, how divine your mission/Here upon our natal sod/Keep—oh, keep the young heart open/Always to the breath of God!/All true trophies of the ages/Are from mother-love impearled/For the hand that rocks the cradle/Is the hand that rules the world.

Blessings on the hand of women!/Fathers, sons, and daughters cry/And the sacred song is mingled/With the worship in the sky/Mingles where no tempest darkens/ Rainbows evermore are hurled/For the hand that rocks the cradle/Is the hand that rules the world.

William Ross Wallace (1819-1881)
