The Cook's Corner: Ribbon Salad

Dessert Plates & Forks

This Ribbon Salad recipe is one of my favorite recipes for a special occasion, party or cookout. It is very colorful, easy to make, makes a large amount and is always a hit. I have been making this for birthdays and various other gatherings/parties since about 1978. A neighbor of mine made this for a cookout because it was one of her favorite things to have. Immediately, I asked her for the recipe because my family greatly enjoyed it. It does take some time to make since you are putting on layer after layer, but it is well worth the effort when you see how pretty it is and how good it tastes. I have passed this recipe on to my children and many friends have requested it. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I have.

RIBBON SALAD

Ingredients:

4 boxes of Jell-O: Lime, Orange, Lemon, Strawberry

1 pint sour cream

2 packages Knox gelatin

2 cups milk

1 cup sugar

2 tsp vanilla

Directions:

Combine 1 box Jell-O and 1 cup boiling water, add ½ cup cold water. Let Jell-O sit until it is room temperature. Butter the glass dish you will be using, add the 1st layer of Jell-O and refrigerate. Mix all Jell-O with 1 cup boiling water & ½ cup cold water and let them sit until you are ready to use them. Boil the 2 cups of milk and add sugar. Dissolve Knox gelatin in ½ cup cold water and add to milk and sugar mixture. Add sour cream & vanilla. Place 1½ cups sour cream mixture between each layer of Jell-O making sure each layer is sticky when pouring the next layer so layers will stick together. You must pour very slowly in order to not mess up the layer beneath. I allow approximately 25 minutes of refrigeration before I add the next layers – the time between layers decreases with each layer. Enjoy!
