GOD'S WOMAN: A Woman, A Wife, A Mother
There has been research, there have been assumptions but still her name is not readily known. She’s simply called Noah’s wife.
Who was she? This woman, wife and mother who witnessed the destruction of mankind and the end of the world as she knew it, yet lived to see God’s promise painted across the sky in a rainbow. What were her thoughts as her husband told her what God had spoken? What was on her heart as she went about her roles as wife and mother watching Noah build the ark? What were her conversations with her family and with God?
Through this woman’s undeniable presence and influence, I’m reminded to:
Trust God
Genesis 6:9 says that Noah was a man who walked closely with God, so it’s safe to assume that his wife was not unaccustomed to him hearing from and communing with the Creator. However, I would like to think that “The Ark” discussion was way out of the ordinary. There’s no record of her questioning or doubting Noah. Perhaps she chose to take her questions and doubts directly to God, maybe she received confirmation from God for herself or she simply believed in her husband’s ability to hear from the Lord. Whatever her thought process was, her ultimate decision was to trust God. She trusted God for the safety and security of her family. She trusted that God would send the rain. She trusted God had a bigger plan.
Whether it’s a husband’s ambitious vision or some other life-altering circumstance, no matter how daunting, how extreme, or impossible it may seem, we’re reminded to simply trust God.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
“And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 (NLT)
Serve wholeheartedly
Throughout time, women have been the backbone of historic moments and movements, and Noah’s wife was no different. While Noah received instruction from God, his wife served alongside and supported him. I can imagine the meals she cooked, the nurture she provided to her sons who would later work with their father, the encouragement she provided when Noah needed an extra boost, how she cared for the home and later the animals on the ark. While she would never know that her husband and the story of the Ark would go down in the annals of history, without a mention of her name, she seemingly served her family wholeheartedly. Together they were working toward God’s plan.
When we serve our family, friends or church, it’s always nice to be recognized and appreciated. But there are times when our service and our sacrifice can be taken for granted or worse, criticized. This is when we must remember the bigger picture and our vital part in God’s great plan. Whether or not our contribution is ever recognized, we can be encouraged that God always sees and rewards.
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24 (NLT)
“Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” Romans 12:4-5 (NLT)
