MAKING ME WHOLE: Zika Virus Disease

Zika virus was first discovered in 1947 and is named after the Zika forest in Uganda. Zika virus disease is a disease that occurs when a person is bitten by a mosquito that is infected with Zika virus. The specific type of mosquito that causes this is the Aedes species mosquito. Recently, Zika virus has been linked to a congenital condition that causes newborns to have unusually small heads (microcephaly). Pictured below, the left picture shows a baby with microcephaly compared to a baby with a normal head size on the right.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the virus are similar to many other diseases and may

not be easily recognized. The most common symptoms are fever, rash,

joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with

symptoms only lasting several days to a week.

Treatment

The symptoms of Zika virus disease can be treated with common pain

and fever medications, rest, and plenty of water. If symptoms worsen,

you should seek medical advice.

Tips on how to avoid Zika virus disease

When travelling to an area that has been reported to have Zika virus

transmission, take precautions to prevent mosquito bites by covering

your entire body, using mosquito nets and repellents.

Did You Know?

In February 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Zika virus a global public health emergency.

At this time about 52 countries and territories have reported local transmission of Zika virus.

Once a person has been infected with Zika virus, he or she is likely to be protected from future infections.

The WHO advises pregnant women or women who want to become pregnant not to travel to areas with ongoing Zika virus outbreaks.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
