TRINITYWOMEN: News You Can Use – August 2015
The month of August was named for the Roman emperor Augustus Caesar in 8 B.C. I enjoy etymology, the study of word origins, and as I thought of the origin of the name of the month that we call “August” my mind moved to thinking about the names accorded to our savior, Jesus. That name, in particular, found in Matthew 1:21, among many other scriptural references, is the Greek form of the Hebrew word “Jehoshua”; it means Jehovah is salvation.
Far too numerable to cite in this brief article, here are just a few more of His precious names. The list of scriptural references is not exhaustive, either.
I AM. The Hebrew word, “Yahweh”, transliterated as “Jehovah” (Exodus 3:14, John 8:58 and Revelation 1:18)
Immanuel, meaning “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23)
Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)
Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:22)
The Word (John 1:1)
Christ, the Greek form of the Hebrew word “Messiah”, meaning “God’s Anointed” (Daniel 9:25, Matthew 1:1 and John 4:25)
Lamb of God (John 1:29) Lamb (Revelation 5:6, 13:8, 15:3 and 22:1)
Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8 and 21:6)
King of Kings, Lord of Lords (I Timothy 6:14-15 and Revelation 17:14 and 19:16)
I AM (Exodus 3:14, John 8:58 and Revelation 1:18)
Among the Caesars, only Julius and Augustus permanently had months named after them. Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy One, the eternally-existent God, is “far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come. (Ephesians 1:21).
As you have occasion to write or speak the name of this month, let it trigger praise to the One whose name is above every name, Jesus! (Philippians 2:9 - 11)
Let it be Jesus/ The first name that I call/Let it be Jesus/My song inside the storm/I'll never need another
For me, to live is Christ/For me, to live is Christ/God I breathe Your name above everything/Let it be, Let it be Jesus
Let it be Jesus/From the rising of the sun/Let it be Jesus/When all is said and done/I'll never need another, Jesus there's no other
Should I ever be abandoned/Should I ever be acclaimed/ Should I ever be surrounded by the fire and the flame/There's a name I will remember/There's a name I will proclaim/Let it be, Let it be my Jesus
